Preparing for Kindergarten!

Kindergarten students in USD 262 begin their day at 8:25 a.m. and end the day at 3:45 p.m. Although the schedule might change a bit depending on the school and teachers, the following schedule would be typical of a kindergarten class:

• Morning greeting
• Whole group literacy
• Literacy small groups 
• Literacy Centers/ Small Groups/Literacy Tier 2 
• Recess/Lunch
• Math Centers/ Small Group/Math Tier 3

Each class attends the library, counselor, and art once a week. Each depends on building and teacher schedules.

Beginning to read
Blending and segmenting words
25 Sight Words

Math:
Numbers 0-20
Addition/Subtraction
2D and 3D shapes
Ten frames
Count to 100 by 1’s and 10’s

Writing:
Learning lowercase and uppercase letters
Opinion, narrative, and informative
Capital, punctuation, spaces

Social studies:
Needs and Wants
Kansas symbols
Map skills

Science:
Forces in Motion
Habitats
Weather and Climate 

Practice these independence skills with your child:

Blowing their nose, washing their hands, tying their shoes, taking jackets and coats off and on, dressing themselves, opening their lunch and snack items, eating lunch in a timely manner, and cleaning up after themselves.

Practice these fine motor skills with your child:

Gripping a pencil, buttoning and zipping, using scissors, tearing paper, taking lids on and off glue sticks, coloring, painting, hole punching, playing with Playdough, and limiting screen time.

Practice these academic and social/emotional skills with your child:

• The difference between letters/numbers 
• Recognizing and writing their names (First letter capitalized and the rest lowercase) 
• Not interrupting (wait time)
• Social interactions (big feelings vs small feelings, etc)
• Taking turns
• Transitions (moving from one task to another - preferred and non-preferred activities)
• Separation from parent/guardian
• Sportsmanship (play games at home - let them lose sometimes)
• Sharing.
