Can your child…

  •  listen to stories without interrupting
  • pay attention for short periods of time to adult-directed tasks
  • share with others
  • follow rules
  • recognize authority
  • separate from parents for multiple hours without being upset
  • managing restroom needs
  • tell an adult their first and last name and birthday
  • tie their shoes
  • hold a writing utensil correctly
  • write their name with only a beginning capital letter
  • cut with scissors 
  • draw a picture
  • name upper and lowercase letters
  • count to 10
  • name colors and basic shapes

Getting Ready for Kindergarten!

USD 262 kindergarten teachers have created a helpful video with essential skills to help your child get ready for their first year of school. The video covers important tasks such as holding scissors, washing hands, putting on coats, and more.

Watch the video to learn how you can support your child in developing these foundational skills for a successful start to kindergarten.

Kindergarten enrollment for the 2025-2026 school year details:

  • Wednesday, April 9, 2025, from 7:30 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.
  • District Office (143 S. Meridian, Valley Center, KS 67147).
  • Will need a copy of the student's birth certificate, completed health assessment (dated 8/13/24 or later), immunization records, and proof of residency.
There will be a Kindergarten Kickoff and Early Childhood Fair on March 31, 2025 in the Valley Center Middle School cafeteria from 5:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m.
