Elementary School Boundary Information
Elementary School Attendance Boundaries
With the continued growth of USD 262 and the upcoming opening of Valley Park Elementary School, the district will implement elementary school attendance boundaries beginning with the 2026–2027 school year. This change will help ensure equitable enrollment across schools, balance classroom sizes, reduce lengthy transportation times for students, and create a more streamlined and efficient enrollment process for families.
On Dec. 8, 2025, the USD 262 Board of Education formally approved the implementation of elementary school attendance boundaries.
Our Commitment to Families
We recognize that changes in school attendance can be emotional for families. These decisions were made thoughtfully, with student experience, safety, and learning at the center. Every USD 262 elementary school offers excellent instruction, caring staff, and strong support systems. No matter which school a child attends, they will be surrounded by dedicated educators who are committed to their success.
We are all Hornets—from pre-kindergarten through graduation—and we will continue working together to make this transition as smooth as possible for students and families.
Why Attendance Boundaries Are Needed
USD 262 continues to grow as new housing developments expand across our district. With this growth comes increased enrollment and additional transportation routes. Establishing attendance boundaries will allow the district to:
-
Balance enrollment across all elementary schools
-
Maintain reasonable class sizes
-
Limit extended bus ride times for students
-
Ensure a fair and equitable enrollment process for families
-
Plan responsibly for future growth
These steps allow us to continue providing high-quality educational experiences for all students.
How Elementary Boundaries Will Work
The district has approved a primary boundary as indicated in the map found below. As a whole, families living east of the boundary line (blue area on map) will attend either Abilene Elementary School or Valley Park Elementary School. Families living west of the boundary line (yellow area on map) will attend either West Elementary School or Wheatland Elementary School.

Special Transfer Policy
The district has developed a special transfer form for unique family circumstance.
Submitting a special transfer request to attend a school outside your assigned elementary attendance boundary does not guarantee placement. All requests are reviewed based on space, staffing, and program availability. Approvals are granted only when they align with district capacity and student needs.
The student's attendance, behavior and academic standing will also be considered when determining if the request will be approved. Families will be notified once decisions are finalized.
What Families Can Expect
-
Families will receive clear communication about what these boundaries mean for their students.
-
A choice survey will be shared with elementary families to collect school preferences within their boundary.
-
The district’s goal is to notify families of their child’s assigned elementary school by March 2026, allowing ample time for planning ahead.
